Worldlink News Bureau: A day before the ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ and planned gherao of the mini-secretariat in protest against the police lathi-charge on protesters last month, the Haryana government on Monday suspended mobile internet services in Karnal to “stop the spread of misinformation” through social media and issued prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC, banning the assembly of five or more people.
The district administration also issued a traffic advisory with planned route diversions. The mobile internet services in the town will remain suspended from 12:30 pm on Monday to Tuesday midnight, the state government said in a statement.
“In view of the call of kisan mahapanchayat in Karnal district, instructions have been given to suspend internet services from 12.30 pm today to 2359 hours on September 7 to maintain law and order,” the statement said.
The mahapanchayat is being held after the Haryana Police had resorted to a lathi-charge on a group of farmers disrupting traffic movement on a national highway near Karnal on August 28. More than 10 protesters were injured in the police action.
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) protesting against the Centre’s three farm laws had threatened to lay siege to the Karnal mini-secretariat if its demands were not met.
On Monday, Haryana Bharatiya Kisan Union (Chaduni) chief Gurnam Singh Chaduni said its demands were not met, so a big panchayat will be held in Karnal on Tuesday, after which farmers will proceed to gherao the mini-secretariat.
“Farmers will be gathering in Karnal’s New Anaj Mandi,” he said, adding they will hold a peaceful protest.
